Page Title

When creating a new webpage, you need to be strategic about the page title. The page title needs to follow guidelines relating to the the length of the title as well as the audience and how the title relates to the content of the page.

Page title length

The length of your page name is very important as the name needs to fit well within the confinds of your navigation. If a page name or title is too long, it might wrap the name in your navigation to a second line or may make items in navigation seem too jumbled. A great guide is to just keep your page title between 50 - 66 characters.

Page audience

We have established the importance of keeping page name length to a minimum, however, using abbreviations and acronyms is discouraged in most instances. Keep in mind who your main audience is and think of your webpages as marketing materials for them. As most departmental sites are marketing toward perspective students, you need to keep their reading level in mind as well as their knowledge of departmental nomenclature as a graduating high school student.

Page title to represent page content

The title of your page needs to represent the main focus of the page.  Think about the key terms in your page content and use those or an overview of those. Make sure the page title is also listed somewhere in the page content or text.

Page title should be clear not clever

When giving your page a title you need to make sure you pick the most accurate words to reflect what the page is. For instance, if you were creating a page about your favorite cars you would't make the page title "my top sweet rides" as no one would ever Google that and it doesn't accurately reflect your page content.
