Glossary

ACCESSIBILITY

Techniques applied to a website to ensure usability for all including those who use assistive technologies such as a screen reader. Also termed web accessibility or digital accessibility.

ALT ATTRIBUTE

An HTML attribute assigned to an image that provides information to screen readers about the image. In Modern Campus this is called an image description.

These are the instructions to add an image including the image attributes.

ANCHOR

Anchor is a hyperlink to a specific location within a web page. Also known as deep linking, or named anchor.

BANNERS

Large images typically used for advertisement across the top of a web page. This method is generally considered to be ineffective. See ‘Banner Blindness’.

BUTTONS

A stylized hyperlink used to promote an actionable item, such as filling out an application.

CALL-TO-ACTION

An intentional area of a web page meant to grab a visitor’s attention and have them complete a task. I.e.; Apply Now!

COLUMN

A vertical division of content used to organize a page.

DIRECTORY (FOLDER, SECTION)

Similar to a folder on your computer. This is where files used on a website are stored and referenced. This includes web pages and sections.

May also be used to reference a web page which displays a list of personnel. ie; Staff directory. This list can be updated in the properties of this page in Modern Campus CMS

GRID SYSTEM

A structure that allows for content to be organized both vertically and horizontally in a consistent and easily manageable fashion. Our Modern Campus CMS pages are built on a 12 column grid system using Bootstrap.

GUTTER

The space between columns.

HTTP, HTTPS

Stands for Hypertext Transfer Protocol. Every URL is preceded by HTTP or HTTPS. HTTP is a communication protocol for distributed, collaborative, and hypermedia information systems. HTTPS is the same as HTTP except that all communication is encrypted and therefore secure. If you reference the wrong protocol you may receive a warning.

An HTML function allowing the visitor to click on images or words to move from one page to another. Also known as a link.

MEDIA

Digital content such as images, video and audio files.

Any collection of predefined options list of navigation items on a website.

Hyperlinks arranged in a logical way and provided in specific locations on a web page that lets the site visitor move through a web sites main sections.

PROFILE PAGE

A web page that shows detailed directory information about an employee. Content for these pages is found and edited in CampusWebData.

ROW

A horizontal division of content used to organize a page.

SECURE SERVER

A computer, physical or virtual, that has been configured for security to mitigate intrusion.

SEO

An acronym for Search Engine Optimization. SEO is practiced to elevate the ranking of any one webpage or website in search results. Contact your webmaster if you have questions about SEO.

SIDE NAV

Navigation presented along the left side of the page (commonly the main site navigation) or the right (less common and usually page specific). The left side navigation is the nav.inc file within the section of the website you are in.

STYLE GUIDE

A document or documents that describe the standards for use of logos, words, images, colors, etc.. in order to maintain cohesion among various materials including all digital media. You can view the standards at Styleguides.uark.edu.

TABS

Navigation that lets the user switch between content panes in a web page. Referred to as ‘tabbed navigation’.

TOP OR MAIN NAV

Navigation presented across the top off a web site. This can be edited in the main-nav.inc file in the root level of your website. The user may not have access to edit this file.

URL

A web address consisting of a string of characters used to reference specific pages and related assets. Visible in the address bar of a web browser.
